The

Basic Information!

Jesus Spoke Aramaic
Below are few examples of the Aramaic expressions that
were used by Jesus:
One of the most famous words that were quoted un-altered
in the bible are his famous words on the cross where he said:
 | ili, ili, lima
shbaqtani (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me). [il,
pronounced as eel, is literarily translated as the High One, or the
Heavenly One] |
And when he addressed the young girl saying:
 | Tlitha qumi (Young maiden arise) |
His most common expression in which he opened almost every
speech or sermon:
 | Shlomo alok (Peace be upon you),
[singular form] |
 | Shlome alkhoun (Peace be upon you),
[plural form] |
The expression that his student addressed him with:
 | Rabi (My teacher), [Pronounced as Rabee,
and not as Rabay] |
Aramaic is one of the oldest surviving languages in the
world, which at one time was the
Lingua-Franca of the East (similar to how the English language is at the present
time). The Aramaic language at one time stretched from the Mediterranean
sea and all to way to China, India, and Mongolia. It was the language of
trade, Diplomacy, and Christian religion. The Aramaic language is also
known as: Syriac, Assyrian, and Chaldean. and to this date it is preserved by
the Syriac speaking churches of the Middle East, who were the first people to
adopt Christianity in the world.
The four page article below is a leaflet prepared for one
of our exhibits, it offers the basic information related to the Aramaic language
(A.K.A. Syriac, Assyrian, & Chaldean) in layman terms, with illustrations of the
different script styles (such as Estrangelo, Eastern and Western).
